QuestionI wanted to buy '97 VW Jetta GT. It has no mechanical issues but needs some cosmetic fixes (fender, door, moon roof). The owner claimed that if I were to fix thouse, I should be able to get an R-title. After doing some research I found that some people claim to have paid up to 3x more for insurance on a car with an R-title. I am a young driver and insurance is out of this world to begin with. Even if I only have enough insurance to fix the other person car and for medical bills for the other person, should I still expect this steep incline on my insurance just because of having an R-title?
AnswerUnderwriting guidelines are different for each company, but I will say that having a rebuilt title should not affect your liability rates. On the other hand, having a rebuilt title will normally restrict you from being able to get collision and comp coverage at a reasonable rate.
Also, keep in mind that you can get quotes prior to purchasing insurance or the vehicle, so I would suggest that route, as simple as it may be. Shop around, insurance claims are regulated by the same laws no matter what company writes the policy.
