QuestionQUESTION: On 2003 Suburban, A/C works very well, but its belt tensioner oscillates horribly (big banging) when engine is accelerating. Mechanic said refrigerant pressure is very high; bled some off. No problem at constant speed or when A/C is off. Tensioner and A/C belt were changed - problem remains. Ideas?
ANSWER: Hi Gene
Check your system pressures and let me know. They may be too high.

QUESTION: Yes Candido, according to the mechanic, the system pressure is very high, but why? No one has worked on the a/c or recharged it ever. If high pressure is causing high torque on the compressor drive, and therefor the tensioner to bang, what causes the high pressure?
Gene.
ANSWER: Check your fan clutch it may not be working properly.

QUESTION: Please help me understand. The fan clutch drives the air conditioner?______
You think, when that clutch is engaged (on),and then the engine is accelerated, that clutch might be slipping?_______.
Thanks again,
Gene.
AnswerFan clutch is the part that cools your radiator. Compressor clutch which is what your are referring to is not slipping. Fan clutch is in between the engine and your radiator. The clutch is the metal piece the blade is plastic. The blade pushes the air through and cools down the engine and ac system. If it is not working properly it will cause your problem.
