would this check engine light have anything to do with the serpentine belt though? i guess that was my question. are they linked in any way??

If the LIGHT was NOT ON prior to the new belt being installed and now the light is ON, Yes, I would suspect that thre is a relation here.

Something to keep in mind: There are, Unfortunately still many repair facilities who when working on a vehicle will intentionally cause another problem just to get more money out of you.

I am NOT saying that the facility that installed your belt is nothing but TOTALLY HONEST and REPUTABLE, But there are some that are NOT.
