2001 Mercury Grand Marquis - how to replace coils

Here are the steps to replace the coils on a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis:

1. Gather your tools and materials:

- New ignition coil(s)

- Socket set

- Ratchet

- Flat-blade screwdriver

- Pliers

- Dielectric grease

2. Park your car in a safe location.

Find a level, stable spot to park your car, turn off the engine, and apply the parking brake.

3. Locate the ignition coils.

These 8 coils sit on the top of the engine, near the front.

4. Disconnect negative battery terminal

The negative battery terminal is usually marked with a "NEG" or "-" sign. Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal.

_WARNING_: When disconnecting the battery terminal, be careful not to touch any metal parts of the car with the wrench.

5. Disconnect electrical harness

Locate the electrical harness connector that is attached to the coil. Press down on the locking tab and pull the connector straight up to disconnect it.

6. Remove old coils

Use a socket set to remove the two bolts that hold each ignition coil. After the bolts have been removed, you can pull the ignition coils straight up and off of the engine.

7. Compare the old and new coils

Compare the old coils to the new coils to make sure that they are the same size and shape. If the coils are not the same, you may need to order the correct coils before continuing.

8. Install the new coils

Insert the new ignition coil into the spark plug hole.

Replace the bolts that you removed in Step 7.

Reconnect the electrical harness connector that you disconnected in Step 5. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector to help prevent corrosion.

9. Reconnect battery

Reconnect negative battery terminal.

10. Test the ignition coils.

Start the car and let it run for a few minutes. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations. If you hear anything unusual, you may need to recheck the ignition coils or take the car to a mechanic.

11. Tighten Bolts.

Using a wrench, tighten the bolts on the new coils until firm.

12. Repeat for other coils.

If your car has more than one coil, repeat steps 4-11 for each coil.
