Auto body repair & detailing: painting, pontiac firebird, paint world

I have a 81 pontiac firebird that needs a paint job. I don't have the money the pay for a professional paint job. I was told costs about $2500.00 for a good paint job. So I thought I would use paint can spray. Current color is red. My wife want green. Should I sand & if so how much? Should I put on a primer before the green? If this is too much work then how much should I sand if I leave it red
