Car Alarms: 2002 Kia Sportage Sporadic remotes, kia sportage, fobs

Hi!

I have a 2002 Kia Sportage that I recently purchased.  I noticed the remotes only worked periodically, though the LED on the fob lights up.  I have replaced the batteries in both fobs, but still the same result.

What should be my next step to correct the problem?

I believe this may be an aftermarket alarm as the parking lights flash instead of the headlights.
