sometimes my alarm will arm and disar but sometimes i cannot get it to work or it will lock then take me all day to try and unlock is there anything i can do please help

This may just be a bad remote control, the remotes are typically the weakest link in a security system as they take a lot of abuse. Radio Shack sells a quick drying electronic cleaning spray, I would suggest picking up a can of it and trying to clean the boards in the remote controls. If this does not fix your problem, then I would suggest picking up new remotes for your unit and programming them to it. If you post the exact make and model of the alarm I may be able to offer assistance in finding replacement remotes.
Does it matter if the light on the remote works also i will hold it up to my ear and can hear wave lenghts i guess i think the alarm is a pro900 pursuit i have a 5 buttom remote

it is probably the remote. These remotes do not handle abuse very well. They do not handle being banged around or dropped very well. Doing a quick eBay search came up with this auction:

I do not know enough about Audiovox to say with absolute certainty that this remote will work, but it appears to be the same.
