QuestionHello Brian,
About 2 or 3 months ago, I asked you about how to wire 2 MB Quart DVC subs to a Kenwood KAC-7202 amp. Well I got through all of that, but now i'm thinking about upgrading my system and getting the full RMS wattage to my 2 subs. I'm contemplating getting the MTX Thunder Elite 801D Mono amp. Now keep in mind, I'm trying to power 2-4Ω DVC subs (400 watts RMS each) & the amp is rated:
-400w. rms x 1 @ 4Ω
-800w. rms x 1 @ 2Ω
But from my calculations and wiring diagrams I've seen, 4Ω DVC's can only be wired to get either a 4Ω load or a 1Ω load. If I wired the 4Ω method, each sub would only get about 200 watts, and 1Ω would give out 500 each (which I don't think the amp is 1Ω stable.) Is this drawn out theory correct? and if so, what amp would you recommend that will give me either a 4Ω, 2Ω, or 1Ω load & 800 watt total RMS (or damn close) to power my subs the right way?
Thanks in advance,
Erik
AnswerHi Erik,
Your calculations are correct; your options with those subs only allow a final impedance of 1 ohm or 4 ohms. To get the maximum rated RMS power you're looking for, you'll need an amp rated at 800 watts RMS at either 4 ohms or 1 ohm. Both are available, but amplifiers with that kind of power at 4 ohms are likely to be more expensive.
Your options are 1-ohm stable mono amplifiers, 2-channel amps (like the one you have now, but with more power) that can be bridged to 4 ohms, or very high power mono amps rated for 800 watts at 4 ohms (these are likely to be the most expensive).
Here are a few amplifiers that should work out for you:
Kenwood X1200M
JL Audio HD750/1
Hifonix TXi 7508
Soundstream PCA2.760
There should be more out there that will work for you as well.
Hope this helps!
Brian
