Auto Racing: Yesterday i had asked you..., stock mustang, ford family
QuestionYesterday i had asked you about a 5.4L engine fitting into a mustang GT which u answerd is possiable but it is hard to come across a 5.4l DOHC i would perfer that it has 4 valves and fairly light so i was wondering if you could give me a ballpark figure of how much it would cost me to build it my self or have someone else build it and if i were to build it my self i was wondering what block do u think is the best to use and parts that i would need for the build i am trying to keep the engine in the ford family so a ford block or shm would be nice i just was wondering what you would do. my other question which im not sure will work do you think it is possiable to fit a 5.8 l engine in a stock Mustang gt with out having to make any major structual changes.
Thanks, Alex
AnswerAlex-
Well...the DOHC 5.4L is the only 4 valve 5.4L out there. And yes...they're hard to find unless you happen to own a '00 Cobra R or a new Ford GT. Fortunately for the rest of us, Ford has started producing the GT 5.4L block and I'm pretty sure they're making 4 valve heads for the block. It's not cheap, but the chances of you finding a '00 Cobra R to rip a motor out of are slim. As for the cost of building the whole motor...I'd say somewhere between $5,000-$7,000. Perhaps as high as $10,000. The block alone is in the $2,000 range. After machining, the whole internal assembly, valvetrain, setup, and block modification to accept a wet sump oiling system (the block is made for dry sump oiling) plus labor...yeah...it's not going to be cheap. As for retrofitting a 351 in there...that I haven't seen yet. Then again, there's a first time for everything. With enough money and fabrication, anything's possible. Hell...I've seen a rear wheel drive V8 Focus...so compared to that this seems like a piece of cake. Hope this helps.
