BMW Repair: 1997BMW STARTER, shadetree mechanic, bmw m3

I HAVE A 1997 BMW  M3 THAT NEEDS THE STARTER REPLACED. I'M NO
EXPERT BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION , BUT AM A PRETTY GOOD  
"SHADETREE" MECHANIC. IS REPLACING THE STARTER SOMETHING I SHOULD
BE ABLE TO DO? OR SHOULD I KEEP MY REPAIRS TO MY OLD TRUCK AND
TURN THIS OVER TO A REAL MECHANIC?   THANKS

Roger, the starter on the six cylinder is high up on the bell housing underneath the intake manifold. It is much easier to do with a lift and the car in the air. I would farm this one out to save headache if you don't have a lift. But it is your choice.
