BMW Repair: Engine code 1397?, cause failure, o rings
QuestionI have a engine light showing up as code 1397 and my code sheet does not show this one? 99' model 323I
VIN FP56112
AnswerGary, the fault is for Camshaft postion sensor "B".
I am not sure which one "B" is but the old camshaft sensors have a stepped nose and are prone to develop microcracks and let oil into the sensor and cause failure. An updated style that has a square nose is now superceded the old style and I have never seen one of these units fail. I would replace both intake and exhaust camshaft positon sensors and the O-rings as the other sensor will fail in the future aswell.
