BMW Repair: 1999 318 4door saloon central locking, module gm, car button

hi,
i have a 1999 318. the central locking has not been working properly for some time now. i can always lock all doors with the remote key as well as the in-car button.however the doors wont open when you use the remote neither will they open when you use the in-car button.
i have to manually open the drivers side with the key.even with the key,sometimes all the doors will not open.the drivers door however opens with the key(manually).i must say the problems us intermmitent.sometimes the central locking works for a day and then, it wont work for a week.
please help.

Kofi, sounds like an intermittent problem with the General Module (GM). This is the body electronic controler. It is a white three connector module behind the glove  box. Try unplugging the central locking fuses and wait a minute then reinstall them. If the funtions return to normal then replace the GM and have it coded by the dealer.
