BMW Repair: Replacing 1989 Headlight, beam headlights, realoem
QuestionJosh,
My passenger side headlight on my '89 325i was shattered (but still works). I've bought a replacement part (low-beam single headlight) with the intention of replacing it myself, but have been stopped short and a little confused. I took off the grill cover and tried to unscrew the long screws holding it on, only to discover I was simply changing the aim and they were not going to come off that way. A friend suggested the plastic covers on the end of those long screws were all that needed to come off, but those are hardened and not coming off without breaking. Am I missing something? Thanks much.
AnswerErin,
Ok, with an '89 you should have the ellipsoid headlights. these have a dark 2" circle in the center of the light. To change bulbs you pull the bulb out from the back. The older BMWs had sealed-beam headlights, where you replace the WHOLE glass unit. I'm taking it, that your ellipsoid headlight is the broken one, and you are trying to replace the housing?
This is a breakdown of what you have (pictured is the driver's side).

You should just remove the adjusting screws and the housing will come loose.
Good luck,
Josh
