BMW Repair: 94 540i Transmission / Drive Shaft, bmw car club, drive shaft
QuestionA noise just started which comes from under the emergency brake handle that sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft. The car has always "shuttered" a little bit when accelerating and when it changes gears, mostly from fist to second. Not a bad shutter but a bit of a shake. I can't find a good mechanic in Raleigh. One that I was referred to told me it was a bad catalytic converter and the parts are $1,000, no labor included. The BMW dealer rode with me and listened to the noise and told me it was the Guipo (sp?) and / or the drive shaft and that I could also have metal floating around in the transmission. If it's just the Guipo they want $650, and it goes up from there. Any help you can give me (especially a good mechanic!) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andy Smith
AnswerDont know a good mechanic but try your local bmw car club for a referal.
The guibo is a common failure as are the u-joints themselves. The is also a center support bearing and mount the could be going bad.
Depending on mileage you might just want to get a complete rebuilt driveshaft.
