GMC Repair: blower motor resistor, blower motor resistor, radio control car
QuestionI have a 1997 GMC k2500. I have replaced the blower motor resistor twice in the past 6 months. It continues to go out. what could be causing this resistor to continuously blow out?
AnswerIt sounds like your fan is drawing too much current. Has you blower motor been making a growling sound prior to the resistor going out? There are a couple of ways around replacing the blower motor itself. You could add a heat sink. Go to Radio Shack, much cheaper there. You could also use a resistor from a 8.4-9.6 resistor from a radio control car.
I have used these before. These can take a great deal of heat. I would use a resistor designed for a brush-less motor system. I am unsure of the cost, but it should resolve the issue. I would even go so far as to add a heat sink, and an additional resistor. The blower motor is not one of the tasks I would look forward to. Only to precede by the ever dreaded heater core.
I would even look at jegs and look at an electric fan. Another option would be to put a power adjustment on your current fan. This resembles a dimmer switch.
