GMC Repair: 1997 GMC Jimmy, gmc jimmy, easy job

I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy, that has a well maintained motor. All of a sudden it has a knock.  It does not miss nor does it smoke.  There is no water in the oil.  I have not driven it since the knocking started and am very concerned about my baby.  Can you give me some suggestions to look for?

this could be a bad lifter which is a easy job to replace then it could be a rod knock which means the lower eng would gve to be rebult or the motor replaced.

i would bring it to a good shop so they can here it and then they can say
