QuestionWell, I have just come across a 1978 Jeep 360 motor out of I think a Jeep Truck or Cherokee. Don't know exactly but I got the motor for free. My questions are as follows....
1. Are the AMC blocks a Ford 351 block with an AMC name or their own block?
2. The block I have is missing the distributer. Is this just a Ford distributer that it could be replaced with?
3. Also all electrical seems to be Motorcraft ie. Brainbox, Ford OEM Starter Solonoid. Did they just use a Ford starter for a 351?
4. What automatic transmissions bolt up to this block? I have heard that a TH400 GM, and Mopar Torqueflite 727, 904, and 999. Also heard Mopar A-833 4 spd manual will bolt up.
5. Does anyone know what these motors are worth?
That is all for now. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. All I know is General Motors, so I have no clue about the AMC manufacturer. Thank you again.

AnswerHere are the asnswers to your questions:
1) AMC manufactured their own engines. They are unique to AMC.
2) It uses an AMC distributor.
3) AMC used a Motorcraft design starter and in 1978, a Motorcraft ignition sysetem. The distributor will not exchange with a Ford, though.
4) The automatic transmission used in that Jeep is a Turbo 400, but it has a bell housing bolt patern designed only for the AMC engine. A GM Turbo 400 will not bolt up to an AMC engine. AMC cars from 1972 on used a Chrysler trans, but it, too, is unique to the AMC block.
5) AMC engines are worth anywhere from $50 to $1000, depending on their condition and the 401 CID are becoming more scarce.
Hope this helps.
