Audio Systems: home wiring, roof joist, terk antenna
QuestionPulling in an FM signal to my receiver (old Marantz). I ran 300 ohm wire back and forth across roof joist, and bring the wire down to receiver-must I (1) stay away from power lines, (2) stay away from speaker cables, (3) can I run partly thru conduit (metal or pvc)?, (4) tie far ends together (loop) or keep separate. Thanks in advance. olde audiophile
AnswerI never recommend running 300 ohm cable. If you run anything it should be 75 ohm coax which is shielded to prevent interference. If the receiver does not have an F connector you can get an adaptor. RG6U you can find at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Sears, Target, etc. You should use F connectors and an FM antenna. You can locate the FM antenna in your attic or on your roof if you decide to take that route.
Frankly a Terk antenna might save you all of that trouble unless you are trying to pick up a very weak signal. There is nothing audiophile about FM reception on any receiver. It is stepped on, because of multiplexing, so you shouldn't worry about anything more than a stable signal.
