Audio Systems: technics home stereo, voltage regulators, static noise

home stereo shuts off - I hear a very loud static noise and then the speakers shut down.  I shut off the stereo and then turn it on and it usually starts up.  It does continue to occur and sometimes I have to shut down and start it a few times.  Is it the stereo?  model Number SA 451

Answer
Look for bad connections at the voltage regulators.  These are 3 legged parts attached to heat sinks.  They will be marked as  one of the following:  7805,7812,7905 nad/or 7912.Try resoldering the pins first.  Let me know if that resolves the problem.
