Audio Systems: speaker / receiver issues, receiver problem, loud pop

Question
I have a JVC 5.1 Receiver.  While watching TV or playing xbox 360 I sometimes get a loud pop from my rear speaker then it goes to very load static on all speakers.  The system is approx. 10 years old.  Do you think I have a speaker or receiver issue?

Answer
This is most likely a receiver problem.  A coupling capacitor is going bad in the front end of the receiver.  The best way to isolate this is to try and determine a pattern of when it fails.  Look for heat/cold or time of running as an indicator.  Please post the model number as well.
