Audio Systems: time and radio station light flickers, 1999 mercury sable, mercury sable

I have a 1999 mercury sable LS with a 3.0L V-6 engine.  My problem concerns the light within the deck that lights up the time and radio station.  When I turn on the car, the time and radio station on and off and sometimes it stays off for 10 seconds or so.  This only happens for about the first 5 to 10 minutes the car is on - after that the radio station and time stay lit up like in any other car.  I have been told I have a short in the radio.  I know how to pop off the dash, but have no idea how to fix this problem.  Is there any part I have to replace.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks

don't take the dash out that is not a radio that unit is only a remote control unit
the radio is in the trunk  left side behind the carpet follow the antenna wire and you will see it
was this car in a accident maybe in the back or your trunk is leaking water and the radio is in there
