Audio Systems: 1990 Chevy stereo problems, chevrolet silverado, ground wires

I have a 1990 Chevrolet Silverado.  The stereo on the radio has quit working for the most part.  I have to have the volume up almost all the way to hear the radio but when switched to am is so loud it blows your ears out.  I have changed the radio out but I have the same problem.  Every once in a while the stereo will come on like there is a short.  I have checked all the wires and they seem to be fine.  Any suggestions?

unfort. I'm a little stumped on this one.  You dont say weather it's a factory or aftermarket radio.  if it's factory I dont do factory.  only after market.  If its after market you could run your own power and ground wires and see if this helps.  
Sorry I guess I'm not too much of a help on this one.  maybe try one of the other experts.
