Audio Systems: How much power do I need for my subwoofer, watts rms, home theatre system
QuestionKevin - I am going to by a new receiver for a home theatre system and wanted to know the watts/channel I should focus on if my subwoofer is an Energy S8.3 (100 Watt RMS) and my speakers are Energy act1 Satellites (15 - 100 watts (RMS / Channel). The stereo is in a medium sized room so I'm not looking to rattle the walls.
Also, any recommendations on brands/models? Budget is $300-500.
Thanks.
AnswerDear Brian,
I recommend the Onkyo TX-SR503 with output power of 75 wpc RMS ($299 retail; $250 at B&H on line) for build quality and reliability or the Sony STR-DG600 with output power of 110 wpc RMS ($299 retail; $230 at B&H) for value. Either will deliver excellent performance. I use both Onkyo and Sony products in two different A/V systems in my house. I use the Onkyo for the main system; the Sony in the bedroom.
Kindest regards,
Kevin
