Audio Systems: sony receiver, pitched whine, sony receiver
QuestionI have a 15 year old Sony receiver(model av-310) that is sending a loud high pitch noise through my speakers. I cannot listen to any music as the noise has become overwhelming. Can it be fixed? Is it worth being fixed?
thanks!
AnswerDear Drew,
A "high pitched whine" usually indicates that wiring has come loose in the output stage of the receiver's amplifier. It should be a relatively inexpensive matter to have a qualified repair technician locate the offenders and solder them back in place.
That having been said, the repair will cost at the least 1/2 hour's labor, generally in the $70-75 range, maybe more. A new Sony receiver will cost $150-250, depending on the model and features. Yes, you can spend up to $1,000, but I've found most of the higher priced models overkill for the standard "I want to watch movies in surround sound without too much hassle" application.
I mention the alternative costs just in case the repair cost climbs to the price of new receiver.
Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!
Kindest regards,
