QuestionDear Sir: I have a Sony STR-VX2 reciever that I purchased from a co-worker who considered it working at the time. I plugged it in, hooked up my eight ohm speakers to it and recieved no sound on tuner, phono (which I also purchased, a Pioneer PL-7), or tape. Both A, B, and A+B combinations were tried. It has two sets of speaker jacks, one of which ranges eight to sixteen ohms. For the heck of it I tried all the connections, and recieved nothing but a quiet, but promising "pop". It seems to be in good shape. The tuner backlight is on, the functions light accordingly. Am I missing something simple, or do I need a repairman/replacement? Thank you for your time and advice.
AnswerDear Andrew,
First, check the user-servicable fuses and replace any that have been broken. However, since you're getting some power to some of the unit's functions, I doubt you've blown a fuse.
Second, make sure the MUTE button isn't engaged.
If either of those doesn't work, you need to take the unit in to a qualified repair service for a bench test.
BTW, this is none of my business, but if I bought something used and it didn't work the first time I plugged it in, I'd have a chat with the seller, especially a co-worker. You may have been sold a load of crapola along with the receiver.
Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!
Kindest regards,
Kevin
