QuestionI have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 I baught used. I noticed my passenger side speaker stopped working one day and then started and has been going in and out. My mechanic found a TSB specifying this issue. The recommended repair is to buy the repair kit for over two hundred bucks. I wanted to know if I can just purchase a regular speaker and replace it. The problem is that the current speakers are amplified. There is a cluster of wires coming into the mini amplifier which is affixed to the back of the speaker. I need to know how to remove the amplifier and if it is okay to try to use a regular speaker aftermarket. I also noticed that if the speaker is not screwed into the door, the rear speaker does not work, however when you re-screw the speaker back into the door the rear speaker works fine, almost like it's grounding out. Can you advise me on this issue. Thank you.
AnswerWill need a professional in person to see if that is possible with a regular old speaker.
If you plan on keeping the truck for five years or more, I would suggest replacing the entire system since it may break somewhere else the next day after going through all this trouble.
For not alot more than 200, you can upgrade.
I would use:
Moderate head unit at Walmart. 50 watt four channel Am/Fm/CD/MP3 with cd-r/rw so u can play up to 256 tunes per cd. Well under 125.00, mine was 79.00.
Installation kit and wiring harness adaptor for about 20.00, again at Walmart/Circuit City.
Efficient Polk audio replacement speakers will round out the deal. Spend as much as you can afford on the speakers.
http://www.crutchfield.com/ for more info on your trucks' needs. They cost a bit more, but sound awesome and will probably not require additional external amps due to thier sensitivity.
They DO offer pigtails and free adaptors but I would still filter the search for non-Infinity equipment if you are going to replace it all.
Of course the sky is the limit, but this would give you a great basis that will last along time and can be upgraded easily if needed. Guaranties are a nice thing too.
The choice is up to you. You can get speakers from crutchfield FOR your existing Infinity system, but a decent pair can be 350-500.00.
Good luck,
