Audio Systems: Intermitent sound from stereo, model jeep, jeep liberty

Jeep Liberty 2002 factory radio

Radio is on but no sound and sometimes the sound works and sometimes it doesn't.  Same for the radio and CD.  If the radio works the CD works and if one doesn't the other doesn't. But the LED works and allows me to change station.

The problem may be with the stereo itself or with an external amp if used. I find on quite a few of these late model Jeep stereos that the mute circuit will turn on inside the stereo cutting off the sound.
