Audio Systems: Car radio interferance, mercury mystique, interference filter

The radio in my 1996 Mercury Mystique has a lot of static when the ignition switch is on, but works fine when the assesory switch is on. What could cause this electrical interferance?

If you are listening to the AM radio you will have static from all the electrical interference from the ignition system and the engine computer. If the interference is coming over the FM radio, perhaps some interference filter has failed.
