Audio Systems: CD ratcheting then ejects, denon, ebay

Took a chance and bought a stereo on ebay. Trying to resolve this with the seller but may not be able to so I would like to know my options. First hooked it up today, radio works fine but when a CD is inserted there is a ratcheting sound and then the CD is ejected a few seconds later.  Sound like something to do with the transport screw which was removed but maybe the laser did not get released.  Model is a RF 8240 (a model the DENON made for them).

To find out where the noise is coming from you will need to remove the top cover and load a CD to see what happens. Most likely the load gear is not fully engaging and this may be what is making the noise.
