Audio Systems: Mazda CD Doesnt Work, 2000 mazda millenia, mazda millenia

I'm currently using a friend's 2000 Mazda Millenia and am trying to fix minor problems as a way of repayment.  Currently, the factory CD player will accept a CD, act like it wants to play, but doesn't and spits the CD out again.  Is there something I can do to repair short of removing the unit and having it professionally repaired?  Thanks.

The problem may be due to a very dirty lense in the pick up assembly. before you remove the CD unit to do a manual cleaning to the lense, you may want to try using a wet type CD lense cleaner. One of the fastest things that will make a CD player skip and/or not play is if any one in the vehicle is a smoker. Cigarette smoke tends to migrate onto the CD lense and even the slightest build up will stop the CD from functioning.
