QuestionOn this car I just bought and I have no history of.....
I am getting P0302 I looked at the plugs and wires and they seem fine. Although one wire did look kind of funny. I was getting sparks from them. I swapped The cylinder 2 plug to cylinder 6 and I am getting the same code P0302. The coil packs seem fine because I get spark from those also. After doing some reading it could also be the ignition control unit?
I still think it maybe spark plug related because I hear a loud pop sometimes when I am driving, sounding like a bad plug/wire. But I would have thought since I changed the cylinder 2 wire to cylinder 6 that will eliminate the problem. But its still at P0302, Cylinder 2.
What do you guys suggest I do to test further? Is there a way to test the Ignition Control Unit?
I also have a VAG-COM. Is there anything i can do to get a deeper analysis of it other than run a code scan?
AnswerHi, Whether you connect the #2 coil to eith #6 or #2, makes no difference, the code reader is determining a fault in the circuit driving that section of the coil pack. The circuit afterwards has no eefect on the code. It can be compared to a swing with a broken chain on the right side. You can reverse the chains at the bottom seat, but looking from the top, the chain right chain is still broken... The only way to perform your test is to switch a coil pack out, and re-run the VAG-COM. Since these items fail fairly frequently, you may as well exchange the coil pack with a new one.
Good luck, Jan
