I was wondering if the a/c clutch is always engage on a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado  when your in heat mode and if not would you what disengage clutch I know some old car ran a/c during defrost

Hello,

I guess I am aging myself to tell you I worked on these when they were new. The design was for the compressor to run in A/C mode and defrost. Now as for figuring out why it is engaged in heat mode, you will need to get a manual.

I remember when I went to GM school the reason for the A/C compressor running in defrost mode wa to take out the moisture from the passenger compartment and run dry air so the windows did not fog up.
