QuestionQUESTION: I have a 1992 Fleetwood Brougham with the the 5.0L FI engine, and here lately I've experienced hard starting, surging idle when cold, with no acceleration, & hesitation, until it warms up. When I try to accelerate, the engine acts like it's not getting fuel, but continues to run when I let off on the pedal. When I shut down for a few(10-20) minutes, the whole process starts over again. When fully warmed up, it runs good. I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor and spark plugs, but no change. What's wrong, or what am I missing?
ANSWER: IS or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated on the dash while driving the vehicle ?.

QUESTION: No, and I'm not so sure that this car is equipped with such a system. I haven't found any references to CHECK ENGINE outputs in my repair manual(Haynes). Also, along the way I added some injector cleaner(Gumout) which seems to be helping in that respect, but not the original problem. Likewise, I filled my tank with Sunoco gasoline to see if I had some bad gas(usually Hess or Costco). No change yet from that. Thanks for the attention, and I hope you can help. -R.
AnswerWhen you turn the ignition key to the ON position WITHOUT starting the engine you should see a yellow light that says CHECK ENGINE on the dash.
