QuestionI have a 1991 Cad Seville - had low refridgerant compressor off msg. Took it to a guy to have the freon upgraded to r134. He removed what little freon that was left and started adding the r134 he quit after a half can because he said my fan motor wasn't kicking on. He is a young guy and I'm hoping he just wasn't familiar with the Cadillac.
When I crank up the car and run it the fan usually kicks on and blows out the hot air so I don't think the fan motor is bad - although he may be right. I was just wondering if he should have kept filling the r134 and the compressor and fan would have kicked on. I had him put in the stop leak as well. Any suggestions? Would it hurt to continue putting in the rest of the r134 -
Thanks Kathy
AnswerFIRST he has to:
1. Remove all the R-12 freon.
2. Install a small can of R-134 refrigerant oil in the system.
3. Evacuate all the air out of the system via a vacuum pump.
4. Jumper the Low side pressure switch wires together or jumper the AC relay to engage the compressor.
5. Install 80% of R-134 freon to the system which would be 1.9 lbs of freon into the system and then removing either jumper and reinstall the low opressure switch 2 wire connector or re-installing the relay.
Your fan motor running has NOTHING to do with adding freon.
STRONGLY suggest you have an experienced person do this conversion.
Personally I would NOT convert the system from R-12 to R-134 due to the system not being designed for R-134 freon.
