Chevrolet Repair: 89 GMC jimmy reinstalling steering lockplate, gmc jimmy, tilt wheel

Question
when i turn left the motor dies. the tilt wheel is lose and my exwife replaced the ignition.i think a wire was getting pinched .im putting the steering wheel back on after i cleaned up all the wires.and i cant get the lockplate to compress the spring so i can get the snap ring back in place.im using the puller to put it back on right? but its just bending the plate up no matter what i do.how do i reinstall the lockplate she is a 89 GMC jimmy with a lot of heart just no steering wheel.please help me help her

Are you using the correct tool to install the lock plate ?.

send me a picture of where you are so far and a picture of the tool you are using to me at:

Also show me that you are NOT trying to install the lock plate BACKWARDS in your pictures.
