Chevrolet Repair: Power Steering, derek lawrence, power steering fluid
QuestionI just noticed that my power steering fluid smells burnt, exactly the same as when a transmission has been slipping. The front seal is weeping. I have recently purchased this vehicle and it has 250k KM's on it. It is a 1996 Suburban K1500 4X4. The steering is still ok, does the pump have to be replaced now before the box gets contaminated from the pump? I have never replaced a pump before so why now?
Thanks
Derek Lawrence
AnswerHi Derek, The fluid can get this smell just from age. You don't need to replace the pump as it is fine. I would just flush out the fluid in the pump. There are some shops that have a machine that does a great job flushing the power steering system.
Hope this helps
