Chevrolet Repair: Transmission Fluid, chevy malibu, filter change

How do you check the tranmission fluid in a 1998 Chevy Malibu? The tranmission is slipping slightly and I want to know if I should put in change fluid and filter before resorting to a complete over-haul.

Hi Marilyn,
If it is slipping, don't drive it before at least checking the fluid level, and if it smells and looks burnt.
A fluid and filter change may be too late, but well worth a try. During the fluid change, see if there are chunks of clutch material in the pan, or Heaven forbid, chunks of metal.
