Chevrolet Repair: engine smoking, valve stems, heavly
Questionmy 87 van smkes heavly at startup but after it warms up it stops what can i do about it .but the engine runs fine keith
AnswerHi Keith,
There are seals on the valve stems, or guides, that harden and crack, allowing oil to run down the valve stems, and get drawn in and burned. A little is burned all the time, but it is more noticable after it sits, and you are sitting still and start it.
The seals can be replaced without pulling the heads, and it isn't all that difficult, if you have some special little tools.
Good luck,
Van
