Chrysler Repair: 2001 Sebring 4 door transmission, computer need, code numbers
QuestionI just started having problems with what I would call a hard downshift at 25-26 mph when braking after I have been going more then 35mph. The car has 78K miles on it. This problem started just after one morning a week ago when it was 9 degrees F and I went to back out of my driveway. I stopped and had to move forward and put the car in "D"(with circle around it) and the car wouldn't move but the engine sped up when pressing the gas pedal. I tried going to park-then reverse then drive and it still did it. I then pulled it down to "L" and it moved forward. I then put it back in reverse to get out of my driveway. I then continued on to work taking it easy so the car would warm up. After that I started to notice this hard downshift at the 25-26 mph range. The car shifts fine from stop up to any speed, it only happens on that downshift. I did find that on braking if I shift to "N" to stop I don't notice any hard downshift happening. When stopped I shift to "D" and the cars upshifts just fine. The temp is now at 30 degrees and I checked the transmission fluid and it was low, just at the bottom of the dipstick. I added fluid thinking that this was the problem and my downshift issue would go away. It hasn't. I am questioning whether something is causing the solenoid relay pack to hang up on the downshift or should I be looking elsewhere. Does the tranie computer need to be re-trained? The fluid or filter has never been replaced yet.
AnswerHi John,
May I inquire what has happened with your transmission?

Hi John,
The first thing to do is get a fault code readout via the socket under the dash near the steering column. An Autozone parts store will often do that for free. Get all the 4-digit fault code numbers, ask for the 'title' of the code too. Then write back and we'll compare to the shop manual. Also, in refilling I hope that used ATF+4 type fluid as that seems to be critical for the life of the trans.
