QuestionHello Kevin, perhaps you can help me. I have an 02 dodge intrepid. The transmission will run properly until you come to a stop, then the car will not shift out of first gear. I have had the problem where it would not shift out of 2nd gear, after I had decellerated to 25 and tried to accellerate.
Furthermore, if the car is idling or coasting, it has slipped into neutral while the shifter remains in Drive.
Now, if I place the car in park, turn off the engine, then immediately start the car back up. The car will continue to shift properly for another 10-15 minutes, then act up again once I decelerate to a stop.
Now I have read that it may be the solenoid pack in the transmission, but how would parking/shutdown/ and startup reset the part to allow the car to run properly, the symptoms seem to point to a sensor or switch, to me....
Thank you for your time.
AnswerHi John,
I would suggest that you get a fault code readout for what might be a 4-digit code stored in the trans controller. An Autozone parts store will do it for free, or an independent shop for $40, or even try your ignition key:'On-off-on-off-on and leave on' doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage is replaced by a 4-digit code(s). Let me know the codes and we'll go from there. On the shifter issue, it may be out of adjustment at the cable/vertical shift rod connection at the transmission proper. So take a look at that for looseness/adjustment.
