Chrysler Repair: neon auto trans., wheel bearings, neon auto
QuestionHi, I have a 1996 dodge neon, sohc W/ 3 spd automatic.101,000 miles. I have a bad crunching coming from the lower area of the trans. The trans. shifts fine but after about 30mph something seems like it is floating around and randomly gets caught and make one heck of a noise that can be felt in the hole car. I've stopped driving the car.Any thoughts? And can a somewhat mechanical person change this trans? Thanks, Al
AnswerIf the noise is totally random, it could possibly be the differential carrier bearing starting to fail. If the noise happens only while turning, check the wheel bearings and axles. If it is the internal bearing(s), have the transmission overhauled rather than getting a used unit. A good tranny shop, at your request, will go in and replace only the parts needed rather than a complete OH since it is shifting properly. It will cost about 40% of an OH.
