AnswerHi Joanne,
I don't know whether the people who are working on your car are knowledgable about the Chrysler electronic transaxle or not. But one of design features is that when something goes awry with the transmission which is recognized by the trans controller as potentially going to cause a total breakdown it will shift into 2nd gear and stay there. This is called "limp-in mode" and uses the most reliable clutch configuration to make sure you can still move.
The controller records the cause that produced the alarm and stores it as a numberical code. The dealer or a competent transmission shop can read the code with a code reader tool. A few of the possibilities are relatively inexpensive to repair, but many of them require removal and internal repair of the transmission which is expensive.
If you haven't had this explanation before, then that is the next thing to do: a code readout. If they give you the code number and a suggested repair, let me know and I will verify that for you (there is no need to authorize a repair when you ask for the code, it is a separate process). I wish I had better news, but this is how I understand the behavior that you have described. Choose a dealer or be sure that the shop has a diagnostic readout box that is equipped to read the codes (it also can read the body computer codes, but those are not related to the transmission. And a reader that only reads the engine controller will not suffice. The Chrysler tool is called a DRB II with a trans/body plug adapter.)
