Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1940 Packard overdrive, indispensable resource, article view

I jus bought this coupe and have no info on it and I was wondering about how to use and check the overdrive as I have never owned a car with one.Is it the mechanical one or electrical? Thanks. Brian.
