Classic/Antique Car Repair: 55 desoto, chrysler club, sound deadner

I replacing the gasket on the firweall.  It looks like tar paper or shingle material.  what was that stuff made of.  i thought a could make one out of a shingle or just tar paper.  please help.  thanks.  tom

I think that was a treated paper we used.  It was a heat shield and sound deadner I think.  I don't think you want to use shingle material.  Cardboard, painted black would be better. A thin piece of fiberglass attached to it would be even better.  You might want to go to the Chrysler club site and see if anyone there can give you a better answer.   http://www.chryslerclub.org/
