Classic/Antique Car Repair: Volkswagen Beetle, spark plug wires, air leaks

i just purchased a 1974 VW Beetle and it has a low rpm skip. It has a hard time Ideling and when your going slow it seems to skip.

Three items to check first, Kevin:

1. Ignition: Be sure the distributor is operating properly and check the coil and spark plug wires.

2. Carburetor: Could need a rebuild; check idle jets and be sure there are no air leaks around the carb base.

3. Throttle stop positioner: Many people remove these, but they are essential to allow the engine to return to a smooth idle after accelerating.
