Classic/Antique Car Repair: 74 F100 Steering Wheel Removal, ford f100, steering wheel puller
QuestionTazz, I have been trying to remove the steering wheel of a '74 Ford F100 Styleside 2WD. I have tried a steering wheel puller and several different gear pullers with no luck. I am thinking this should not be this hard! At this point, I am afraid of damaging the end of the steering shaft. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
AnswerA puller is the only way and unfortunately you can't use heat. Next time, put it in a 'bind' with the puller and then give a sharp rap to the shaft pushing on the rod with a hammer. One sharp blow should make the wheel pop up. Make sure you have the proper cap on the tip of the wheel puller.
Also, just a side point, make sure you are using a puller designed for steering wheels. There IS a difference.
