QuestionI have a 1984 Cadillac Eldorado 4100 engine with an alternator that can only handle @ 50 amps, but have a high performance stereo system with an auxillary batterry that pulls avout 45 amps all by itself. I need a heavy duty alternator that can handle @ 100 amps compatible with engine. do you where I can find one?
AnswerYour question is way out of my area of knowledge here, I'm an antique and classics guy.
However, I happen to have an 81 Imperial with a 100 AMP alternator as standard equipment, though (it came with a very high performance stereo system also, for that era), so I know they were available in those years.
Even a 50 Amp alternator can supply 600 Watts of power continuously, and I don't think your eardrums could stand that much noise!
I suspect your car has a much more powerful alternator than 50 amps, because the Eldo was also loaded with electrical equipment - I question your 50 amp rating. Check your shop manual to see what the original spec was, and maybe you'll discover a much more capable alternator was available on some models with the HT4100 engine - any of those would fit your car, I believe.
Perhaps an expert with more knowledge of later model cars would be able to give you more advice - or a stereo installation shop might also have some ideas.
