Classic/Antique Car Repair: Oil Change, routine oil changes, variable viscosity
QuestionI have a 68 Mustang with 128,000 miles on it. I only drive the car about 1000 miles a year. My question concerns routine oil changes. How often should I change the oil? Also, what type of oil would be better to use with this type of use?
AnswerFirst, I want to explain the delay in my answer: The All-Experts site has a problem that they seem unable to fix - it causes as much as 3 days to elapse before they send me the questions. I just got this this minute!
You have a problem that all of us in the old car hobby face - and I don't really know of any scientific study of this issue. What I do, and have done for over 40 years, is change my oil every 1500 miles or every year, whichever happens first. I use SAE30W oil in all my old cars, I buy the NAPA store's best brand of premium oil. Do not confuse this with non-detergent oil, which some will recommend, but I definitely DO NOT recommend non-detergent oil. The NAPA premium straight 30W oil is the top grade of oil. Also, do not confuse this with 10W30 or any of the other variable viscosity oils - that is not as good a lubricant as straight 30W in my opinion and experience, although I know there are folks who will argue the point. Change your oil filter every other oil change, also.
