Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1967 Pontiac Catalina, 1967 pontiac catalina, pontiac catalina
QuestionJust bought a 1967 Pontiac with a 1971 Firebird engine. I have replaced the starter and battery. It has been starting up when the engine is cold, but not starting when the engine is hot. When I turn the key, it doesn't make any noise at all - no clicking or dragging. Now I have just tried to start it with the engine cold and it won't start - and doesn't make any noise. Where do I look?
AnswerHi Sean:
There is a pretty good chance you have a bad starter. As the starter bushings goes bad, it doesn't work when hot. Once they are worn to a point where they do not touch the rotor at all, you get nothing. Either have your current starter rebuilt or purchase a new one. Also, consider the starter solenoid, which may have gone as well. Best to replace both.
Hope this helps...
