Classic/Antique Car Repair: beetle starter, battery cables, prime suspect
QuestionUnmodified 69 beetle, intermittently won't start, with only a brief click. Randomly occurs, then starts at some point later without specific intervention. Occurs when car both cold and hot. ? solenoid.
AnswerIn cases like this when the car acts up I turn on the lights. Then try the starter again. If it only clicks and the lights do not dim, then the solenoid is the prime suspect. If the lights dim the starter may be drawing too much current or the battery cables may be loose. I do not think that it is the battery as batteries usually do not show this much of a recovery after appearing dead.
Good luck, Brad
